I lost my first baby, Kayden, to alloimmunization in 2011. She was stillborn at 31 weeks after an emergency C-section. In the years that followed, I went on to have two successful pregnancies in 2013 and 2014, though neither came without complications or constant monitoring. Today, my son Carter is 13 and my daughter Avery is 11.

And I want to say they still gave it to me, not knowing at that point it had already been too late. How did I get sensitized? My second clarified: “presector”. We find ourselves here in 2014. I researched my way, at last, into a healthy, stable, happy marriage. Thus commenced an unloading of my years of natural birth research onto my poor unsuspecting Kenyan husband.

I recently went through my first alloimmunised pregnancy and now 5 weeks postpartum. I was high risk, early delivery due to risking mom and titers and bubs spent 2 weeks in NICU and special care. I had little c and big E antibodies. I also live in Australia, where I’ve hardly heard of this condition.

Our journey began in the summer of 2003 when we were expecting our fourth child. My first prenatal blood work came back showing I had antibodies to the little c antigen. We learned my husband carries two copies of the antigen so we knew the baby would definitely be affected by my antibodies.
